Welcome back to the Phi Tau Blog, phriends! We are so excited to have you follow along as we embark on yet another exciting and musical semester at the University of North Texas College of Music.
On Tuesday, several of our chapter’s future music educators attended a guest presentation by the president-elect of NAfME (National Association for Music Education, Dr. Deb Confredo. Dr. Confredo discussed how to ensure equity for all students in music education, as well as emphasizing the importance of putting humans over music as teachers. Thank you, Dr. Confredo, Dr. Montemayor, and the UNT chapter of NAfME for making this event possible!

On Thursday, the Wind Studies season-and the College of Music’s large ensemble performance season-began with the UNT Wind Orchestra’s first concert of the semester. The ensemble performed two world premieres, as well as a collaboration with the Seraph Brass, an all-female brass quintet. Congratulations Emily, Megan, Sam, and Anthony on a wonderful and memorable start to the Wind Studies performance season! We were also happy to bump into the one and only Mama Capps as we took our first post-concert chapter selfie on the lobby stairs!
On Friday, we welcomed our three new candidates to the chapter during our Fall 2023 Candidate Pinning Ceremony: Sophie Chien (harp), Rachel Hatanaka (flute), and Matthew Onlin (clarinet). While we did not take any pictures at the ceremony this semester, our chapter had an amazing time welcoming these new members, and as always, we had a blast spending time together and with our new candidates at Rusty Taco after!
On Saturday, members of UNT Green Brigade (Elijah, Nguyen) went to Louisiana Tech University to perform as an away team pep band, as our Mean Green Football fought hard and until the end against the LA Tech Bulldogs to secure their first win of the season! Go Mean Green!

On Sunday, our chapter president, Emily, performed at a composition recital titled "Every Artist Needs a Prison". Most of our chapter attended the evening performance of the recital after our weekly meeting, and all in the audience walked away moved by this incredibly thought-provoking and emotional piece. Bravo, Emily, and congratulations to senior composition major Heather Pryse on an amazing premiere!
We cannot wait to continue highlighting the wonderful things our members, and our chapter, accomplish throughout this semester. As the semester progresses, you may even see some other names from throughout our chapter write these weekly posts-stay tuned!
