For this week's Summer Spotlight, we will be traveling to Grapevine, TX for the 2023 Mu Phi Epsilon International Convention with our chapter president, Emily O'Brien!
Prior to the International Convention, Emily spent the bulk of the summer at UNT, continuing to take classes and partake in performance opportunities. From May 24 to June 16, Emily, along with other members of the chapter (Abby, David Molina, Carter, Caleb), took Woodwind Pedagogy, a five-week course focused on giving a crash course in the histories of all of the woodwind instruments and some of the different method and exercise books available for teaching students. While there were many late nights spent in the library, Emily enjoyed getting to take the class with other clarinet players and members of the chapter!
Additionally, Emily, along with other members of the chapter (Abby, Sam, Anthony, Carter, Jack), participated in the UNT Conductors Collegium Wind Symphony. The Conductors Collegium took place from June 12-June 23, and members of the ensemble got the opportunity to serve as the lab ensemble for conductors from all over the nation and the world, as these conductors worked with our wonderful Wind Studies faculty to refine their skills and perform four concerts in Winspear Hall.
This past week, in Grapevine, was the 2023 Mu Phi Epsilon International Convention, a 4-day event bringing members of Mu Phi Epsilon from around the world together. Two members of our chapter attended: Emily as our chapter's Music Delegate, and Charlie Kantenberger as our chapter's Business Delegate, and both got the opportunity to meet other members of our fraternity from different collegiate and alumni chapters!

During the convention, a new International Executive Board was elected, Charlie participated in business meetings, and Emily performed in a convention recital. Both Emily and Charlie met many amazing people, and are looking forward to coming back for the upcoming Fall 2023 semester stronger than ever as leaders of our chapter! The chapter even received an Honorable Mention for its overall number of 2022-2023 SERV hours.

We miss you, Emily, and hope your summer continues to go well!
